COBRA is a federal law that provides temporary health care coverage to employees of companies with 20 or more people who had been receiving coverage from their employer's group plan, but lose it because of certain life changes. Unlike the Affordable Care Act, COBRA only offers coverage for 18 months. It usually costs more than a federal exchange plan and can have some significant exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
