Medigap (Medicare supplement insurance) provides coverage for some of the cost-sharing that Original Medicare doesn't. For example, if your hospital stay is more than 20 days at a time, you will have to pay extra out-of-pocket with Medicare Part A or B alone. If you also have Medigap coverage, they'll cover up to 100% of those costs.

If you're eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid benefits, the latter may be able to help with some of these expenses as well. Talk with your doctor about which option makes sense for you and how much it might cost overall before making any decisions on what type of supplemental insurance might work best for you.
